Special Services for Families and Children

Part of Barnert Temple's mission is to help create Jewish experiences that are relevant, accessible and meaningful. This  takes on unique meaning for our families with young children and for our younger congregants. To help meet the special needs of these groups, we offer  Young Family Services, High Holiday Junior Congregation  and other High Holiday experiences for young people.

Young Family Service (Up to 2nd Grade)
· Rosh Hashanah: Monday, September 10, at 9 am
· Yom Kippur: Wednesday, September 19, at 9 am

This family-friendly service is designed to make the themes and messages of the High Holidays relevant to younger children in grades 2 and younger. This 30-45 minute service helps our younger members develop positive impressions of High Holiday worship. Parents are expected to stay with their children.

Junior Congregation (Grades 3-6)
· Rosh Hashanah: Monday, September 10, at 10:30 am
· Yom Kippur: Wednesday, September 19, at 10:30 am

Children are welcome at all of our services, but Junior Congregation is a little more fun! This special program is open to Barnert Temple members, only. A program of this nature requires a great deal of preparation and planning. For this reason, we aks that you register in advance. There is no on-site registration. Return your registration form by Tuesday, September 4 to:

High Holiday Junior Congregation, Barnert Temple, 747 Route 208 South, Franklin Lakes, NJ 07417.

A few important notes about Junior Congregation.

  • We appreciate donations to support this effort. Please make your gift payable to Barnert Temple.
  • Parents must accompany their children, no matter what age, to the Junior Congregation area and sign each child in and out. Sign-in will take place in the Atrium of the Center for Lifelong Learning.
  • All children must stay with the program throughout its entirety. We know you appreciate our security measures and our need to maintain decorum in our hallways.
  • If you have any questions, contact Sara Losch or Jennifer Katz-Goldstein at 201-848-1027.

In addition to the Family Service and Junior Congregation, we offer several other special services for children.  Please use this  link to the High Holidays for Children Page for more detailed information.

Torah Tots (Ages 2-4) & Kavanah Kids (Ages 5-8):
· Rosh Hashanah (Monday, September 10) 10:15 am – 12:30 pm
· Yom Kippur (Wednesday, September 19) 10:15 am – 2 pm

Children will participate in age appropriate activities that teach about the holidays.

Middle School Experience(Grades 6 - 8)
· Rosh Hashanah - Monday, September 10, 10:30 am
· Yom Kippur - Wednesday, September 19, 10:30 am

For the first time at Barnert, our Middle School aged children can connect to the High Holidays in a special experience. Youth Director Billy Bloomberg and Rabbinical student Becca Diamond are leading 6th through 8th graders in t’filah (prayer service) and a program to give students the opportunity to learn from each other and find a personal connection to this holy time. We will rejoin the adult service for the Torah reading and concluding prayers.
To help us make the planning process smoother, we highly encourage you to register in advance. The registration deadline is  August 31st.  Just use the form included in your High Holy Days ticket mailing. Note: If you arrive without pre-registering, please anticipate a longer wait at the table to allow us time to gather your child’s information
Donations to support this effort are appreciated! Please make your gift payable to Barnert Temple.
