9:00 AM - 12:00 PMRamapo Reservation

All are welcome to join us for a morning Shabbat hike at the Ramapo Reservation.

We'll begin with a short Shabbat ritual before we begin our hike.  There will be an easy option for those with kids or those who want a less taxing experience and a more challenging option as well.

Scarlett Oak Pond plus Ramapo Falls

Distance: 1.4 miles pond loop plus 1 mile to falls and back
Duration:  Approximately 1 ½ hours
Terrain:  Suitable for novice hikers.  Mostly flat with a hill to the falls
Suitable for: Elementary age children to adult

This scenic 2.4-mile hike makes a circuit around Scarlett Oak Pond and tacks on a short out and back visit to Ramapo Falls.  The trail around Scarlett Oak Pond is flat made mostly of packed dirt with some gravel. You’ll see the surrounding mountains’ beautiful reflection in the pond while listening to gentle flow of the Ramapo River beside you. Once we circle the pond, we’ll head up to Ramapo Falls, a 1-mile round trip.  A flat trail, made of packed dirt and some sections with rocks and roots, will take us to small bridge over a stream, then we encounter the only elevation of the hike, a .3 mile walk to Ramapo Falls.  The terrain is steepest for a short bit after the bridge then rises more gradually to the falls.  There are roots and rocks to navigate on this trail as well.  We’ll rest at the falls, take pictures, and then return to the parking lot.

Ramapo Ramble Trail

Distance:  Approximately 4.5 miles
Duration: Approximately 2 ½ hours
Elevation Gain: 715 feet
Terrain:  Suitable for Intermediate Hikers.  Flat sections, 4 climbs (two of them somewhat steep), and downhills (one somewhat steep).
Suitable for:  Children aged 10 and above to adult

This hike takes in the best of the Ramapo Reservation.  We’ll begin with a relatively flat walk to a bridge, then continue uphill to Ramapo Falls.  The terrain is steepest for a short bit right after the bridge then rises more gradually to the falls.  After snapping some pictures, we’ll continue uphill to MacMillan Reservoir.   From here the trail follows a gentle incline above the reservoir and crosses a feeder brook over stones.  The second climb ascends somewhat steeply to the top of the ridge and then proceeds until we hit the short turn off for a viewpoint with beautiful vistas of the surrounding hills, Ramapo College, and NYC in the distance.  From here, the trail descends somewhat steeply in places then declines more gently as we return to the parking lot.
