ADULT EDUCATION OFFERINGS AT BARNERTLifelong Learning

At Barnert, we truly believe in developing and fostering a lifelong love of learning. This begins with our preschool program and continues through the various adult education and learning opportunities we offer throughout the year.

Below are descriptions of the ongoing classes we offer throughout the year. Many of these classes are informal in nature and allow participants to learn from and challenge one another. Classes are open to all Temple members, so come and check us out! We look forward to your participation!

ADULT BAR/BAT MITZVAH CLASS
ONE SUNDAY A MONTH, 8:30 - 9:30 AM

Have you regretted not having a Bar or Bat Mitzvah when you were 13? Always thought to yourself, "One day..."? That day can be closer than you realize!

Rabbi Frishman will begin a new class for adults in September. Here are some FAQs.

What is an Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah? It is a ceremony marking an adult's deeper understanding of the basics of Judaism, including the ability to read and comprehend our prayers, read or chant from the Torah, the skill of studying Torah and other Jewish texts, and increased knowledge of Jewish history, culture and ethics.
How much Hebrew do I need to know to enroll? You should have an advanced beginner's knowledge of Hebrew, meaning that you are able to read Hebrew words slowly, even if you don't understand what they mean.
Who can assess my Hebrew? Contact Rabbi Frishman!
How often will the class meet, and when? We'll meet monthly on Sunday mornings for an hour, beginning in September.
How large will the class be? We need a minimum of 10 participants, but won’t go over 15. Encourage your friends to join with you!
Will there be a lot of homework? Recognizing how complex our lives are, there will not be a lot of work. This is one reason we are meeting monthly over two years. However, there is an expectation of personal responsibility in working towards the goal.
Can I try it out? Certainly. Give yourself the chance to see how you feel. There is everything to gain!
When would I actually become Bar or Bat Mitzvah? Together, our class will choose a Friday evening in late spring 2010.
What if I want to become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah with my son or daughter? Contact Rabbi Frishman!
How can I reach Rabbi Frishman? We thought you’d never ask: rabbifrish@barnerttemple.org. Contact her today!

2008 Meeting Dates: 9/21, 10/12, 11/16, 12/21
