About Us : About Barnert Temple

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES AT BARNERTTzedakah

Tzedakah is one of the many mitzvot that we aim to fulfill as Jews.  Barnert Temple provides our congregants with many opportunities to both support our Temple, its special programming, and social action activities while fulfilling the obligation of tzedakah.

Jewish tradition holds that anytime we celebrate simchas (times of rejoicing) we offer tzedakah at the time of the celebration. When the simcha is officiated by one of our clergy, it is appropriate to make a contribution to a discretionary fund. Often our clergy provide support and comfort during times of sorrow as well, and so it is also appropriate to give tzedakah at those moments.

Gifts to the discretionary funds are used to support congregants in need as well as causes important to the clergy and the Temple. This form of tzedakah is a way of acknowledging our appreciation, not only for our clergy's support of us, but also for our larger Temple Community. As Judaism teaches us, when we receive, we give back.

You might ask, "How much should I give?" History shows us that people give the right amount. Some have requested that we suggest an appropriate donation. We are uncomfortable with this because your gift is very personal. Our experience has shown that people give generously and from the heart. We are grateful for all gifts.

Throughout the year, there are numerous and diverse opportunities to support a wide variety of social action causes. However, below is a listing of year-round ways in which you can support our Temple.

SCRIP CardsSCRIP:  IT'S EASY, IT'S CONVENIENT, AND IT'S FREE!
SCRIP is one of the easiest ways to support the Barnert Temple Sisterhood and the Temple projects and social action causes it supports.

What is SCRIP? In simple terms, it's a program that allows you to buy gift cards or certificates, just like the ones you see in the stores, for face value. The Sisterhood receives a portion of gift cards' value from the merchants.  SCRIP allows you to buy what you need, when you want to buy it.  SCRIP doesn't cost you anything because you simply use your SCRIP gift cards/certificates like cash.  If you spend $25 you receive a $25 gift card.

The list of merchants (see below) makes it easy for anyone to participate in this program.  SCRIP gift cards also make great gifts!  The next time you need a gift card for your kids, colleagues or a friends, consider purchasing your cards through the Barnert Temple Sisterhood.

To purchase SCRIP, contact Susan Sauer or Amy Lynn.
